Sonia Delaunay was the queen of colour, fresh with proportion, stylisation, and technique fitting and she is first of my series “women doing cool shit”.
The word simultaneous (simultané) describes Sonia Delaunay — a state of being or a happening or a union of several things at the same time. However, the case of Sonia Delaunay shows how gender worked invisibly (outside the work of art) to detract from the value of work that met formalist standard. Despite her equal mastery of the conception and execution of the idea they created together, in an earlier essay by Marsden Hartley indicates “Whatever there is of originality in the idea of Orphisme shall be credited to [Robert] Delaunay as the inventor”.
